Renewable Energy Certificates

Renewable Energy Certificates represent proof that one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from a renewable energy source and fed into the power grid. They allow organisations to claim the environmental benefits of renewable power, even if the actual electricity they use comes from the general grid. Businesses often purchase these certificates to meet sustainability goals, comply with renewable energy regulations, or demonstrate support for clean energy markets

Renewable Electricity Certificates

If your organisation uses electricity then you can make it renewable using a renewable electrity certificate, where the electricity used is decarbonised using a certificate from renewable sources such as wind, solar, hydro or geothermal energy. This is applicable for your factory as well as your office.

In the EU, environmental attribute certificates that cover electricity are called Guarantees of Origin (GoO). These certificates are official documents verifying that 1 MWh of renewable electricity has been added to the grid. They verify and trace the ownership of renewable electricity from its renewable source and country of origin. Organisations purchase these certificates as a strategic tool to gain and prove exclusive rights to consume the renewably electricity generated.

Biomethane Certificates

Factories and transporters relying on gas for production and haulage can use verified biomethane certificates to show they have purchased renewable gas made from biomass instead of conventional fossil origins. The can be used as e.g. Certificates of Origin or for compliance Proof of Sustainability.

Biomethane certificates (also GoO) are environmental attribute certificates covering gas generated from renewable sources like waste and biomass. These official documents guarantee the renewable attributes of 1 MWh of biomethane injected into the gas grid. Biomethane certificates verify the amount injected, the feedstock type (such as waste or energy crops), quality, and additional certifications. They serve as a strategic tool to prove green gas consumption without needing to procure it directly from the utility provider, offering flexibility, financial benefits and reduced risk. A strong biomethane procurement strategy can make a real difference to your scope 1 and decarbonisation journey.
